Lexington, MA — April 20, 2009 — AER Inc., leading experts in seasonal weather forecasting, announced today that Dr. Judah Cohen, Director of Seasonal Forecasting and Ms. Maria Pirone, Vice President of the Data Services Division, were invited speakers at the “First Hydrometeorology and Energy Applied Science Conference” on April 20-21 in Moscow. Sponsored by the Russian Ministry of Energy, ROSHYDROMET, and the Agency for Forecasting Energy Balance, this conference brought together over fifty energy executives from forty electric and gas companies throughout the Russian Federation.
Dr. Cohen presented his paper on “Regional Climate Change and Impacts from 2010-2050: Temperature and the Energy Sector,” with related analysis and discussion on the impacts for Russia. Ms. Pirone presented two papers over the two day conference- an “Overview of the U.S. Natural Gas Market” and “Weather Forecast Input for Natural Gas Consumption Forecasting.”
Having used AER’s highly regarded sCast forecast for the 2008-2009 winter season, the participants were particularly impressed with how well it predicted the warming in great detail for the 81 administrative subjects of the Russian Federation. There was particular interest in how to best use HDD forecasts more effectively next year.
The conference concluded with a round table discussion on next steps going forward and a very comprehensive tour of the modeling facility for the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia.
