“When space weather attacks!” provides an outstanding explanation in “plain English” of the risk to the electrical grid that could occur from a solar flare and recommended approaches to address the problem.
The article in The Washington Post summarizes the research findings and practical recommendations from the Lloyd’s report “Solar Storm Risk to the North American Electric Grid” which was co-authored by AER scientists.
“[Lloyd’s of London’s Neil] Smith notes that the Northeast, with its aging power grid and peculiar geologic features, is especially at risk. Suffice it to say, it’s not fun to think about what would happen to the region if 40 million people had to go without power indefinitely.”
